The "N" in 22ND8-02 denotes a nylon insert, added by ESNA to replace the earlier fiber-insert 22D8-02, which is prone to cracking with age. AirCorps recommends nylon insert fasteners wherever possible. There are 17 occurrences of this spline nut on the P-51D (25 units total per aircraft), most commonly installed with the 73-22007 trim tab hinge fitting assembly, which is the subject of Mandatory Service Bulletin P51-001 and Supplement 1 requiring correct NAS221 series 10-32 brazier head screws.
