Gear preload shims are stacked in the Hydromatic dome to set the preload between the dome's cam gear and the blade gear segments. That controls backlash and keeps blade pitch change smooth and precise. They're used as required during propeller overhaul, together with the thinner 63780-5 (0.005 in.) shim, to reach the specified preload.
