The nylon locking insert replaced ESNA's earlier fiber insert, which is prone to cracking with age. AirCorps recommends nylon insert fasteners wherever possible. The 42ND16-048 is a self-locking spline nut. The splined outside diameter lets the nut be driven and held with a spline socket from one side only, so it works as a blind-mounted fastener where there is no room to get a wrench on a hex nut and no flange to rivet a plate nut to.
